Job Overview

Job Title: Autism Specialist Support Worker (Adults) Salary: £10.50 per hour - student/recent graduate £11-12 per hour - professional negotiable according to experience and qualifications Hours of work: flexible, to be arranged based on 10-20hrs/week. Reporting to: Max Bacharach, Service Lead / Carol Hunt, Director Main Duties and Responsibilities The post holder will provide support for people with Autism/Asperger Syndrome within the community, their own homes and in employment/education settings, as follows: ● Provide one-to-one support to people with Autism/AS in accordance with their individual support plans as commissioned by the local authority. ● Take responsibility for learning about people using the service and the way Asperger Syndrome affects them, for ‘listening’ to each individual, and for reflecting on your own practice to continuously develop your knowledge/skills. ● Specifically take account of the choices, needs and wishes of each service user, involving service users in their own plans and day-to-day decisions. ● Whilst adhering to the individual’s support plan, prompt, motivate and empower independence and greater community engagement. ● Develop person-centred working relationships with service users. ● Maintaining daily records in the form of session notes for each service user. ● Maintain service-user confidentiality at all times. Support service users in their daily lives through: ● Understanding the importance of a service-user’s support plan/working file, and using these effectively and professionally to inform good practice on a daily basis. ● Actively encouraging and supporting meaningful activities both inside and outside of the home, in accordance with the individual’s support plan, their needs, choices and interests. ● Adhering to all safeguarding requirements and any procedures aimed at the protection of vulnerable adults. ● Attending and participating in all meetings as required, including Supervision and Appraisals. ● Working with Service Lead/Management to identify needs and access relevant learning and development opportunities, and sharing the learning with others. ● To ensure policies and procedures in relation to all areas of service provision are adhered to. ● To complete any other duties and responsibilities when requested, which are commensurate with the role. Compliance ● Ensure that all support is compliant with LEAT’s philosophy and unique approach. ● Ensure all activities are agreed with Management. ● Ensure that Health and Safety legislation is adhered to. ● Maintain a high standard of safeguarding, reporting and other communications. ● Work collaboratively with health and other professions and family members when required. ● To carry out the duties and responsibilities of the post in compliance with all LEAT policies. Autism Specialist Support Worker - Person Specification The person for this role should: ● Have an understanding of – and ideally some previous experience with – Autism/Asperger Syndrome, and how it affects people. ● Have enthusiasm and an interest in supporting clients to develop their skills and interests in the wider community. ● Have enthusiasm and an interest in supporting clients to access places, groups, services and opportunities, in a world which often isn’t built for them. ● Have enthusiasm and an interest in supporting clients to maintain independent living, and engage in meaningful work-related activity if appropriate. ● Be able to show empathy, patience, tolerance and respect, and the ability to use a ‘low arousal’ (calm) approach with clients and others. ● Be reliable, punctual, honest and reflective, and able to work flexibly to meet service needs. ● Be able to communicate verbally and in written form (e.g. text/email/MS Word), on a regular basis as needed. A good command of English is essential. ● Be willing to undertake training as necessary. ● Be prepared to travel within the city and/or county of Leicester/shire. ● It would be preferable, but not essential, to have your own car and clean driving licence for travel; otherwise public transport could be used.
