Job Overview
Role Purpose
To provide high-quality care and early education for children aged 0–5, following the EYFS, safeguarding requirements, and the nursery’s policies. The practitioner will act as a key person, build strong relationships with families, and contribute to a safe, stimulating, inclusive environment where every child can thrive.
Key Responsibilities
1. Childcare & Curriculum
· Deliver engaging, developmentally appropriate activities linked to the EYFS.
· Observe, assess, and plan for children’s learning using the nursery’s chosen system (paper or digital).
· Support children’s communication, independence, emotional wellbeing, and school readiness.
· Promote inclusive practice, adapting activities for SEND and EAL children.
2. Safeguarding & Welfare
· Follow all safeguarding procedures and report concerns immediately to the DSL.
· Maintain a safe, clean, and well-organised environment, completing daily checks and risk assessments.
· Follow safer sleep guidance, including sleep checks, sleep position rules, and comforter procedures.
· Administer first aid (if trained) and follow accident/incident reporting procedures.
3. Key Person Responsibilities
· Build warm, professional relationships with children and families.
· Complete settling-in processes, learning journals, progress checks, and transition reports.
· Communicate daily with parents in a friendly, informative, and supportive manner.
4. Teamwork & Professionalism
· Work collaboratively with colleagues to maintain high standards of care and education.
· Contribute ideas to planning, room organisation, and continuous provision.
· Attend staff meetings, training, and supervision sessions.
· Uphold the nursery’s values, policies, and code of conduct at all times.
5. Health & Safety
· Follow hygiene routines, including nappy changing, toileting, and food safety.
· Support children with self-care skills in a respectful, age-appropriate way.
· Ensure all equipment, resources, and areas are safe and well maintained.
Skills and Qualifications required
Person Specification
Essential
· Level 3 Early Years qualification (full and relevant), or above.
· Strong knowledge of the EYFS, safeguarding, and child development.
· Experience working with children aged 0–5 in an early years setting.
· Ability to build positive relationships with children, families, and colleagues.
· Good communication, organisation, and record-keeping skills.
· A warm, nurturing, and professional approach.
Desirable
· Paediatric First Aid certificate (this will be required during your time with us)
· Experience with SEND support or behaviour strategies.
· Familiarity with digital learning journals.
· Additional training (e.g., behaviour management, communication & language, safer sleep).
