Job Overview

The apprenticeship fixed‑term contract is for 5 years; the qualification itself typically takes around 54 months to complete; this can be achieved earlier if you have Recognised Prior Learning (RPL). Once you achieve the qualification and successfully complete your End Point Assessment, you may be able to progress into a qualified role sooner , subject to business need and successful performance.

You could be working in vacant properties that need repair, rebuilds to make properties suitable for new tenants or working within in a customer’s home. You’ll be expected to undertake a range of multi trade tasks including Electrical work (your core trade) as well as Plastering, Plumbing, Carpentry and other minor repairs that could include bricklaying. This could be an urgent call out or a scheduled appointment.

You will join the supportive teams of time served operatives, team leaders and members of the apprenticeship management team who will provide you with guidance and support throughout the duration of your apprenticeship. You’ll have a clear career progression plan and will work towards achieving a recognised level 3 Installation and Maintenance Electrician qualification and will be gaining a wide range of practical hands-on experience of Electric work in our properties.

For this apprenticeship, you will spend some of your time studying your chosen course at Leicester college. This could be either a one day a week or a week block (depending on which college on the college program). You’ll be expected to make your own way there and back to and from the college. There, you will learn the theory behind your new skills which will enable you to put them into practice in the workplace thereafter. Additionally, you will be supported in completing coursework or preparing for any exams.

Working closely with tenants and leaseholders you’ll undertake repairs and maintenance at various properties. You will provide advice & guidance with the support of the team to customers, ensuring that they are kept informed of progress. Your working environment may sometimes be cramped, at height and outdoors in all weathers, at all times of the year.

As a qualified as a Craft Trade operative with electrics, your potential earnings could be up to £34k per year.

Skills and Qualifications required

Ideally, you will have relevant experience in house maintenance or improvement. This could have been gained through previous employment, work experience, voluntary work, home D.I.Y, school or college courses. You will be able to demonstrate mechanical reasoning, and practical abilities in relation to building/maintenance activities.

You should possess a genuine determination and a keen willingness to learn. You should also strive towards providing the best possible customer service and drive to achieve a professional qualification, whilst gaining invaluable hands-on experience along the way.

You will be expected to work as part of a team whilst being committed to producing work of a high quality. You will also be able to use your own initiative and take the lead when appropriate circumstances arise. You will understand the importance of customer care and reflect Leicester City councils’ values of confidence, clarity, respectfulness, fairness and accountability.

You will have achieved a GSCE Level 4, grade C or equivalent, or must be willing to demonstrate this through undertaking a test at assessment stage to meet this level.

You must prove your commitment, be willing and able to undergo a course of study and training up to and including apprentice Level 3. Being able to manage time effectively and meet work deadlines. As well as having literacy and numeracy skills to complete relevant trade qualifications.
