Job Overview

Responsible to:  Home Manager

Major Objectives

          The Cook will provide a variety of hot and cold nourishing meals for all residents according to a rolling menu plan and budget agreed with the home manager.

          The Cook will ensure that regulations concerning Environmental Health & Food Safety and Hygiene are adhered to at all times in the kitchen and storage areas.

          The Cook will bring to the attention of the home manager any matter which will improve health & safety within the home and the service to residents.

Principal Responsibilities

         Ensure good hygiene practice for all equipment and food preparation surfaces, by regularly cleaning and disinfecting all areas in the kitchen, storage cupboards, hot plates, etc.

          Provide varied and balanced diets generally and special diets where needed.

          Regularly check food stocks and ensure adequate levels are maintained.

          Work with suppliers to ensure adequate food stocks, and ensure all food is stored in accordance with the suppliers' recommendations.

          Ensure all deliveries are correct against orders and delivery notes/invoices and report discrepancies.

          Ensure that food is consumed by recommended "use by" dates, and rotate stock to ensure 'first-in/first-out' usage.

          Discard food that has become unfit for consumption.

          Ensure the correct and safe use of all food processing equipment, including regular cleaning and maintenance.

          Ensure correct personal hygiene of all staff using the kitchen.

          Reduce food waste as far as possible, including making recommendations to home manager on improvements in food handling and utilisation.

          Assist staff to serve up meals.

          Ensure all surfaces are cleared, waste bins emptied and the dish-washer is empty.

          Record refrigerator and freezer temperatures regularly and de-frost as needed.

          Comply with COSHH regulations. 

          Report any maintenance requirements to the home manager.

          Undertake training as required.

          Abide by the policies and procedures of the home.

          Other duties as may be reasonably required.

Qualifications Required

Basic food hygiene certificate, catering certificate desirable.

Hours per week

20 hours a week various between (8am – 5pm). Two shifts for week one, three shifts for week 2
