Join us as an Apprentice within our dedicated and highly professional service. You’ll undertake a Level 2 Apprenticeship in Horticulture where you’ll receive on-the-job training. Upon successful completion of the apprenticeship, and subject to meeting the requirements of the role, we may be able to offer you a permanent position.

Reporting to the Grounds Maintenance Team Leader, you’ll undertake high quality horticultural work to ensure our parks and open spaces are enjoyable, safe and attractive places to visit.

This is a full- time, fixed term position for 2 years, working 37 hours per week. Your working hours are 7.30am-3.30pm from Monday to Thursday and 7.30am to 3.00pm on Friday. You’ll be based at any our parks across the city and will work in all weathers.

What you’ll be doing: You’ll be maintaining horticultural features on green infrastructure including parks, housing, highway’s land and develop new hard and soft landscaping features. You’ll be trained how to operate and maintain hand and mechanical specialist equipment used in the maintenance of features including driving and operate a tractor. You’ll prepare and apply chemicals e.g., herbicides, fungicides, insecticides etc and full training will be provided. As part of the apprenticeship, you’ll attend college once a week, complete the required theory and practical work and maintain an evidence-based work portfolio that is to be reviewed regularly at supervision.

What you’ll need: You’ll have a keen interest in Horticulture and be fully committed to undertaking an NVQ Level 2 in horticulture, fulfilling all requirements of the apprenticeship scheme. You’ll have good communication skills and be able to demonstrate an interest of working for Leicester City Council. Working effectively as a team member, you’ll be able to work on your own, using your initiative to complete tasks. You’ll be fit and able to undertake the physical activities associated with the role including manual handling and lifting heavy equipment and materials.

A full UK driving licence is essential.
